Oliver Price’s Weekly GDPR Blog #13 – GDPR is not Y2K

Happy New Year!
This week I was pleased to see that in her very last blog of 2017 Elizabeth Denham, the Information Commissioner (who is the person responsible for enforcing Data Protection in the UK) echoed the message that I had been giving in recent months. A link to her blog can be found here
The theme of Elizabeth Denham’s blog is very much about a sensible practical approach. There is also interesting commentary that whilst there will be no grace period from the 25 May 2018, the ICO’s focus will be to ensure compliance rather than, in her own words, that she will not seek to “make early examples of organisations for minor breaches or reach for large fines straight away”. As I mentioned last month I have enquired about the ICO’s breach procedures, which are not yet clear. I will blog about that as soon as the ICO responds. In the meantime I intend to keep speaking about the GDPR and take steps to ensure all of those who listen to me are ready for the 25 May 2018.
