Wansbroughs Celebrates International Women’s Day 2023
On 8 March 2023, Wansbroughs will join the global celebrations for International Women’s Day and this year is celebrating the achievements of women at the firm and nationwide.
2022 was a poignant year for women in law as it marked 100 years since the first woman qualified as a solicitor in England and Wales. Carrie Morrison, Mary Pickup, Mary Sykes, Maud Crofts, and Agnes Twiston Hughes became the first women to practice law in 1922, paving the way for female solicitors of the future, and, today, just over 50% of all practising solicitors are women (Law Society 2022).
At Wansbroughs, women represent one third of the partnership; with in excess of 100 years of experience between them. Partners Anna Wensley Stock, Naomi Owen and Sarah Alexander each have more than 20 years’ experience in their respective practice areas and two of them are permanent members of the firm’s management board.
The firm is investing in its people and has introduced its own leadership programme, with support from an outside training specialist. The firm aims to inspire junior lawyers, encouraging them to enhance their skills and preparing them for future leadership roles.
Partners Emily Anderson, Jennifer Vooght, Kathryn Smith Cowap have all progressed their careers at Wansbroughs, to become well-respected leaders in their field, with repeated recommendations in the Legal 500 directory.
The firm will celebrate International Women’s Day with a private afternoon tea event, featuring British writer and Sunday Times’ Bestselling author Kate/Katherine Webb who will be interviewed by former Telegraph Weekend editor Jon Stock, also a published author. A charity raffle will also be held in aid of Swindon Domestic Abuse Support Service. The event has been organised in partnership with the Marlborough LitFest; Wansbroughs is an active sponsor of this year’s LitFest which will take place from 28 September to 1 October 2023.
Partners Kathryn Smith Cowap and Sarah Alexander commented:
“We are thrilled to be able to host our first event in aid of International Women’s Day. The day seeks to celebrate the achievements of women across our community as well as within Wansbroughs. It is our privilege to welcome British author Katherine Webb, along with respected writer Jon Stock, and we look forward to providing our guests with a truly memorable afternoon.”
