EMPLOYMENT LAW REFORMS

On 3 October 2011 the Business Secretary, Vince Cable, and Chancellor, George Osborne, announced that the qualifying period for unfair dismissal claims will be increased from one year to two years. This will come into force on 6 April 2012.

It has also been announced that fees will be introduced for Employment Tribunal claims. If an individual wants to bring a claim they will need to pay a fee. It has been reported in the press that this will be £250, however, this has not been confirmed.

It is hoped that these changes will reduce the number of Employment Tribunal claims and boost the economy. However, there are concerns that it will increase the number of discrimination claims, for which there is no qualifying period.

We will keep you updated in relation to these changes and developments. If you need any further information, please contact rebecca.peterson@wansbroughs.com or 01380 733394.
